How Minimal Works
Minimal was made to be as simple as possible. Instead of asking "What can we add?", we asked "What can we leave out?"
Minimal is Text-Only
In fact, this page and our help pages are the only pages where you will ever see images (and that's only because we have to in order to show you how to use Minimal)
The Minimal editor is based entirely on Markdown, which is a simple way of formatting text without having to know HTML or how to code. It gives you the ability to write quickly and easily, so that you can focus on your words instead of fighting with formatting.
Markdown is simple. Add **two asterisks around any words** to make them bold. Add *one asterisk* or an _underline_ to make your word(s) italicized. Add a # before a line to make it a heading. We support anything from blockquotes to lists to code. Just use this handy guide to get started and it'll become second-nature almost immediately.
The editor is simple and elegant, so it doesn't get in your way:
Sometimes, it's helpful to see how your article looks before publishing it. Simply toggle "Preview" mode on any article and see exactly what your readers will see.
For long-form content, or articles that are more narrative in nature, you can turn on story mode.
Story Mode formats your article like a book, with a drop-cap and indented paragraph for a look that stands out and gives your content a more sophisticated look and feel.
Publish Immediately or Schedule for Later
If you subscribe to the Audience Builder plan, you have the choice to either publish immediately, or schedule your post for any future day and time.
If you schedule a post for later, we'll publish it and send you an email with a link once it goes live. Easy!
Public or Private (Unlisted) Articles
If you have an article that you want to share with a select audience, but don't want the world to know about it (yet), you can publish your article as "unlisted" and it won't show up anywhere else on the site. Only people with a direct link to your article will be able to find it.
This is particularly useful when you want to run your idea or article by someone before publishing it. When you're ready, you can switch it to "Public" with a single click!
Create Unlimited Blogs for Any Topic
What can you do if you want to write about your photography hobby and also the things you've learned about marketing this week? Most blogs try to create filters with hashtags or blog categories. The problem with that is people who follow you for your photography may not care about your marketing insights, and you end up alienating them.
If you subscribe to the Audience Builder plan, you can just create another blog! In fact, you can create as many as you'd like. One for every topic you're interested in. When you write an article, you can choose which blog your article belongs to, and it is only published there.
If you don't have specific topics in mind, you can simply post to your main (personal) blog that you start out with when you sign up. It's totally up to you!
Your readers will love Minimal because it's simple, with an easy-to-read layout and beautiful typography. It's just enough design to not get in their way, but not enough to be a distraction. Your articles end with a brief bio about you, the author, that you can customize in your profile.
Reading on Minimal is as pleasant and distraction-free as writing is, so your readers will come back looking for more.
Minimal is just getting started. We've got plans to add many more features in the coming months, including:
- Following authors and blogs that interest you (and email notifications when they post something new)
- As many automatic SEO optimizations as we can build, so you don't have to worry about people finding your content.
- (Optional) Auto-publish your newly-published article to Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.
- (Optional) Tasteful social share buttons, so your readers can help you spread the word.
- Dark mode for those that prefer it.
- A personalized homepage, based on your interests.
- Custom domains
- And much more. Your feedback and recommendations are welcome!
